Have your cake and cheat it with these savvy cooking sets to make food with the family

NEED to keep the little ones occupied this week?

With many of us raiding the fridge during lockdown, it makes sense to make food into a family activity.

Easy-to-prepare options and kits are best for this but you needn’t fork out a fortune . . .

BAKE IT ’TIL YOU MAKE IT: Who doesn’t like a cheeky slice of chocolate cake?

For a quick nibble on the cheap and to get the kids involved with decorating,

I love the Tesco Chocolate Sponge Cake Mix at £1 — saving on the Betty Crocker Devil’s Food Cake Mix for £2.50.

The instructions are easy to follow and the children can decorate it with their favourite icing sugar or toppings.

If you fancy something different, head to Asda, where you can nab a Slime Themed Cake Décor Cupcake Kit for £2.25.

On Amazon a four-pack of the same mix costs £14.99 (£3.75 per pack).

SLICE AS NICE: Pizza always goes down a treat and making your own with the kids can keep them occupied.

I love the easy kits sold at pizzabellissima.co.uk.

For £19.99 you get four hand-stretched pizza bases, 500g of mozzarella, 450g of tomato sauce plus four soft drinks.

CUTTER ABOVE: I loved decorating cookies (and eating them!) as a kid.

There are some fantastic kits available — those at craftandcrumb.com are great, especially their unicorn cookie kit, £14.99.

Each set includes biscuit mix, unicorn cutter, icing pen, sprinkles, sugarpaste, colour-in activity sheet and personalised name label.

Plus, the website is offering 25 per cent off when you buy two or more large baking kits.

LESS LOLLY: For warmer days, an ice lolly goes down a treat.

You can grab a four-lolly mould set from gooutdoors.co.uk for £3, down from £6, and kids can get creative with the flavours.

Use different juices, squashes or even fizzy drinks.

I like making milkshake lollies for an extra sweet treat too.

If kids want to get really creative, they can drop slices of their favourite fruit into the mould before freezing.

Giselle's little helper

WETHERSPOON regulars will raise a glass to this.

The pub chain is cutting food and drink prices by up to 28 per cent this week thanks to the VAT reduction.

So a pint of ale could now be just £1.29.

The chain says all reductions, which it will apply to real ale, coffee, soft drinks, breakfasts, burgers and pizzas, will be live by July 20.
