Influencer faces backlash for posting picture with visible tampon string

Feeling that Instagram snaps rarely represent real life, influencer Sophie Elise decided to share a picture where you could see her tampon string.

Sophie, 25, a singer from Oslo, Norway, posted the completely nude photo to her account, @sophieelise, where she has 447,000 followers on 9 November.

She wanted to fight period stigma and included the caption ‘My body, period.’

The image was a side-view of her bum, which Sophie has recently had reconstructed after a botched surgery in Turkey.

Sophie said: ‘I follow so many Instagram-models.

‘I feel that they only post really sexy photos and never really show the other side of things, that the focus on being sexy is always the ‘same thing’ with no room for ‘flaws’.

‘Since I usually take a lot of photos with my clothes off and this day happened to be one of them, and I had my period, it kind of naturally happened and I decided to go along with it.’

The response has been mixed and she’s faced some negative comments for showing the realities of being a woman.

‘I got a lot of DMs from men saying “this is so gross, I will unfollow you now” and I just think it’s so insane that people in this world still find a woman’s period to be gross,’ she said.

‘It’s insane. I actually care so little about my period and talk openly about it, and it’s just sad that people don’t want to.’

But the comments haven’t just come from men.

She added: ‘I got so many nasty messages but the ones that shock me the most are those from women who say that I’m a bad role model and that I should just hide the fact that I’m on my period.

‘I’m human. Those women really p*** me off, but again, I don’t know if they realise how insane they sound.

‘I really want to remove some of that stigma around periods.

‘And also, when I follow girls who do similar things, like posting pictures of their arm hair or their period – because I have seen it before, I just see it rarely – it makes me feel so good and empowered!

‘A woman can be sexy even on her period and we should embrace that.’

However, some of her other followers loved the picture and embraced what she was trying to do.

‘Absolutely raw! Proud to be a woman!’ one follower wrote.

‘Sophie 4 president!,’ another chimed.
