Four of Lord Nelson’s books containing his radically different handwriting – before and after he lost his right arm in battle – are to go under the hammer.
They include a volume of biographies in which the naval hero made amendments about his lover Lady Emma Hamilton.
The books were part of Nelson’s personal library on board HMS Victory at the Battle of Trafalgar, where he was killed in action in 1805, aged 47.
Nelson’s copy of Dialogues Of The Dead, a series of biographies, is inscribed “Horatio Nelson, Windsor August […] 1784”.
Thirteen years later he lost his right arm in the Battle of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

The other books contain notes written with his left hand – and the writing is significantly different.
Max Hasler, of Forum Auctions, which is hosting tomorrow’s sale in Battersea, South West London, said: “That with his right hand is quite elegant.
“But Nelson’s writing with his left hand is a lot more scratchy and scrawly.”
The books are likely to sell for a total of £33,000.
