Marvel Stars Chadwick Boseman and Lupita Nyong'o First Auditioned for These 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Roles

Chadwick Boseman and Lupita Nyong’o are two of the most high-profile actors in Hollywood. Both of them are also in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, playing the roles of T’Challa and Nakia. It was revealed recently that both of the actors actually auditioned for two other roles in the MCU before landing their Black Panther characters. Both of them auditioned for Guardians of the Galaxy roles.

Chadwick Boseman and Lupita Nyong’o are MCU staples

Both Boseman and Lupita Nyong’o are both key characters in the MCU. Boseman has already appeared in four films: Captain America: Civil War, Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.

And while Nyong’o has only appeared in one film, Black Panther, she had a super important role in the project, one she will very likely reprise in more Marvel films.

The ‘Black Panther’ duo initially auditioned for these ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ roles

It’s mostly common knowledge now that Boseman got the call to star as T’Challa in the MCU while he was promoting his James Brown biopic, Get On Up. But we didn’t know about his Marvel history until now. Boseman actually auditioned for the role of Drax the Destroyer in Guardians of the Galaxy. He impressed the team so much, he didn’t need an audition for T’Challa. “He was someone we all felt really strongly would be amazing as Black Panther,” said casting director Sarah Finn.

Nyong’o also auditioned for a Guardians of the Galaxy character, going for the role of Nebula. However, bigger was in store for her as Nakia in Black Panther. “She was a straight offer. She had been on our radar for a long, long time, and is an incredible, exceptional talent,” said Finn.

Dave Bautista and Karan Gillian wound up being cast as Drax and Nebula.

T’Challa and Nakia are poised to lead a post-‘Endgame’ MCU

With core, longtime Avengers now gone, like Chris Evans’ Captain America, Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, and Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, the newer Avengers are set to lead the new squad.

This means that T’Challa will have a prominent role in likely all of the next group of Marvel movies as he will be one of the biggest Avengers.

While it can be assured that Nyong’o as Nakia will be back for Black Panther 2, don’t be surprised to see her in other MCU films as well. Marvel may surprise us and make Nakia may be a core member of the Avengers herself!

The next Marvel film, Black Widow, starring Johansson (in her final MCU film), David Harbour, Florence Pugh, O-T Fagbenle, and Rachel Weisz, is due in theaters on May 1, 2020.
