DEAR DEIDRE: MY partner got so drunk when we were out one night he was shouting in my face. I pushed him and he fell over. He phoned the police and told them I’d assaulted him. I was kept in custody overnight. It was traumatic.
When they wanted to charge me he denied it all and said he was too drunk to remember what had actually happened. We have been together for 16 years. He is 44, I am 43. I can’t seem to get over what he has put me through. I feel I can’t trust him again.
He only drinks at weekends but when he does, he doesn’t know when he has had enough. He says he regrets what he did but how can I be in a relationship with someone who has hurt me so much?
DEIDRE SAYS: On a sober weekday tell him his drinking is wrecking your relationship.
If he won’t listen, then I’m afraid he’s choosing the booze before you, and that’s not a relationship to stay in.
My e-leaflet Drink Problem? explains where he can get help.
He’d need to stop entirely, at least for a while.
