Nobody wants to spend Christmas alone – and that goes for animals too.
But one older cat is facing her second Christmas without the love of a family as the longest resident at a north London animal shelter – as families keep choosing kittens and younger cats instead.
Lady Felix has been patiently waiting for her new home, but sadly no families have chosen her yet, meaning she might spend another festive period on her own.
The sweet kitty came to Mayhew – an animal welfare charity – because her previous owner became ill and was unable to take care of her anymore. Lady Felix has been living at the shelter for over a year now, and the charity is desperate to find her loving forever home.
Lady Felix is 14 years old and like other older cats, they tend to get left behind as everybody wants playful little kittens.
However the staff at Mayhew want more people to understand that older cats can make great companions – especially for older people. They also tend to be calmer and require less supervision.
They make great pets for people who are out at work all day, and they are also happy to chill and snooze – where younger cats need more play and physical exercise.
‘Felix is a lovely cat and it’s so sad that she is still with us after all this time,’ says Kayleigh Kilcommons, head of cattery at Mayhew. ‘Older cats need stability and routine that’s why it’s so important that we find her a loving new home.
‘She has recovered really well from her health issues but six months ago, it was noted that she has some kidney problems which don’t cause her any issues.
‘In the evenings, she tends to get the zoomies and will often run around with her soft toy mouse in her own game of cat and mouse. Felix is generally very chilled and loves to snooze, or daydream while she cuddles with her unicorn.
‘She is very affectionate and has a lot of love still to give. She adores a scratch behind the ear when she is in the mood, or will nudge your hand or arm to let you know she wants attention.
‘It would be wonderful if someone could give her a new and forever home. That would be the best present ever for Lady Felix.’
