Oscar nominee Olivia Colman's The Favourite director praises actress' ability

On Feb. 24, winners will be crowned at the 91st Academy Awards. But before the red carpet is rolled out and envelopes are opened, Entertainment Weekly has inside intel on the 2019 nominees. Keep checking back at EW.com this week for spotlights on contenders in all the major categories.

Olivia Colman
Starring in: The Favourite
Age: 45
Oscar past: 0 noms, 0 wins
Role call: Mercurial monarch Queen Anne, who finds herself in the middle of a palace love triangle with confidante Sarah (Rachel Weisz) and her protegée Abigail (Emma Stone)

Heavy is the head that wears the crown. But Olivia Colman’s extraordinary performance as the taciturn Queen Anne in The Favourite is also effortless. While typical screen portrayals of royals reek of glamour and regality, Colman’s leader is a manic mess, bouncing wildly from giddy highs of racing lobsters to tragic lows of her painful battles with gout. Director Yorgos Lanthimos says that Colman never faltered in charting Anne’s roller coaster of emotions. “It’s incredible how easy it is for her — people hate her for it,” jokes Lanthimos. “With Olivia, you just have to remind her where she is and what the situation is, and she turns it on immediately.”
