The past two years have been a political wakening, and it's rippled throughout the entertainment industry. Priyanka Chopra is the latest actress to stand up for immigrants as president Donald Trump's policies — from the travel ban on several predominantly muslim countries to U.S. Customs Border Control ripping apart children from their families — increasingly endanger them.
Chopra, who was born in Jamshedpur, India, opened up about what it means to be an immigrant in America. She said it's "a little scary" and "uncertain,” in an interview with Marie Claire. “I am a working immigrant myself,” she said. “I’ve worked with UNICEF with refugee children; I’ve seen what it feels like when you’re displaced. I try and use my platform to talk about kindness and compassion. We as people need to stand up for what we think is right and what we feel is right."
The Quantico and Baywatch actress also talked about splitting her time between Mumbai and the States, specifically New York City where her fiancé Nick Jonas spent a lot of time growing up. “I’m an Indian citizen. I’m here on a visa,” she said. “[America] has engulfed me in the best, warmest, biggest hug. I have tremendous love for America, being my host country for so many years.”
Chopra's sentiments about how necessary compassion is for those who've immigrated to the United States echo what Gigi Hadid said about the government separating children from their parents at the border. Back in June, Hadid issued a plea to her followers to take action to support immigrants, saying, "There are some stories where the children are being taken to the States because being in Mexico is extremely UNSAFE and they DO NOT HAVE THE RESOURCES for affordable day-care… You don't know the individual stories and tragic experiences these people have been through. They wouldn't need to come to the neighboring country if they had better rights and help in their own… so why don't you start to think about how we could help improve the lives of people in the communities on the other side of the border so that they don't have to risk their lives daily for their families."
