Is there a colour as serene as sage green?
This oh-so-trendy shade become a new neutral, working in any room of a home as a tonal accent or a colourway for an entire living space.
According to furniture brand Swoon, there’s been a 287% increase in Google searches for the colour in the context of interiors.
Colour theorist and author of The Secret Lives of Colour, Kassia St Clair, tells Metro.co.uk that lockdown ‘has done a lot of good for sage green’.
‘Green has been creeping forward longer term in trends,’ she explains. ‘Sage has lots of grey undertones and it’s very restful and soothing, and depending on where you go with it, you can have some sage greens that are quite 1950s and quite sweet looking, but then you can ones that are a bit more naturalistic and greyer, just super sophisticated.
‘You can have a play around with it and depending on the tone you use, you can shift its meaning.’
Culturally, we’re in a time with heightened attention given to the natural world and Kassia believes our love of green tones is both a reflection of our love and concern for nature.
‘It also fits in well with the natural materials we’re bringing into our homes, things like wood finishes people are loving, and terracotta – greens look great with those kinds of materials,’ she notes.
Being in lockdown, she’s seen people go either one of two ways with home colour: either we’ve craved bright colours, like yellow and orange, to contrast with the mood of the pandemic, or people have been drawn to ‘softer, mellow, textural’ colours.
Sage falls into this latter group.
