What is it about dads that makes them transform so drastically from being anti-pet to fussing over an animal to a ridiculous degree?

It feels like everyone has a story of their father declaring that a cat or dog is absolutely banned from their home, then months later becoming besotted with the new best pal.

But even if this is a tale as old as time, we still love to watch when it plays out.

So we’re glad Shaan Reno, 29, documented his dad’s cat-loving journey for us all to enjoy.

Shaan secretly recorded himself begging his dad, Raj, 60, for a family pet – with Raj turning down his plea every time.

Shaan’s dad claimed he ‘hated’ cats and threatened to ‘kick out’ any feline addition to the home.

But Shaan ignored his dad’s warnings and sneakily adopted a cat, called Angie.

Lo and behold, Raj went back on all his proclamations and experienced ‘love at first sight’.

The dad now spends every night playing with Angie, and Shaan even admits the cat is no longer his, but his dad’s.

Shaan, from Bexley, Kent, said: ‘[My dad] always wanted a daughter and he wanted me to be a girl, so he treats the cat like his daughter.

‘He turns into this gooey character. He’s a child at heart.

‘He’s a way better dad to the cat than he ever was to me. He actually plays with the cat but he didn’t play with me!

‘This is the complete opposite to what I thought would happen. He could have actually kicked it out of the garden like he said in the video.

‘It went from my cat to his cat in three or four days.

‘I came in one night a few days later and I could hear him talking to her like he’s talking to a baby. Then the next day the cat’s sitting on his lap. I’m thinking what the hell is going on.

‘I was annoyed at first. I bought this cat for me but every time I walked into the room it’d go from me to him or every time my dad walked into the room the cat went to him.

‘He’s a very strict dad and you don’t hear much from him, but when the cat’s around or he’s had a few drinks he’s a completely different person.’

Half a year after Shaan got the cat, he moved out to take a job in Birmingham, leaving Angie with his mum Sadhna Reeno, 58, his dad and brother Amit Reeno, 33.

Since he’s returned, Shaan admits it’s clear Angie is his dad’s cat, and Raj can’t believe how much the black-tipped British shorthair has taken to him.

Raj said: ‘I hated cats before this. When I used to go round people’s houses I’d walk away because I didn’t want them near me. Suddenly it’s all changed.

‘When we got her I saw this little cute cat walking around the corner and I pretended I wasn’t interested. He reminded me of a little lion cub and she just grew on me.

‘I come home from work and she’ll just sit with me and we’ll start playing. I love it. Any time I have spare time. We’re best friends now and it’s a complete surprise.

‘I’d agree I’m a better parent to the cat [than Shaan] because cats don’t answer back.’
