Thanks to the popularity of the nation’s Queen of Clean, Mrs Hinch, and everyone’s favourite declutterer Marie Kondo, we all know how satisfying it can feel to witness an expanse of spanking white shower grout or an artfully arranged sock drawer after all that effort of scrubbing and sorting.
But new research has revealed what could be a surprising knock-on effect of our obsession for the cleaning hacks shared by Mrs Hinch, aka domestic goddess Sophie Hinchcliffe, as well as Marie’s tidying tips.

After surveying 3,234 participants and asking them a series of questions about household chores and pleasures, HeatingForce.co.uk have discovered that a huge number of Brits plump for neat sheets and sparkling taps over sizzling sex!
When the participants were asked if the satisfactory feeling they get when they complete each household task is better than sex, 59% collectively agreed, that yes… it most certainly is.

Breaking down the results of the survey it seems that a whopping 88% of Brits feel more satisfied making their own bed as opposed to having any fun in between the sheets – although perhaps plumping the pillows and smoothing out the duvet cover does make for a more inviting environment.
Additionally, 69% get a greater kick out of tidying up than they do enjoying a spot of nookie. Who’d have thought that picking up dirty washing from the floor and putting our bookshelves in colour-coordinated order would give more pleasure than a spot of Netflix and chill?!
Even dusting is seen as more favourable to a kiss and cuddle, with 61 per cent of those questioned preferring to deal with cobwebs than get frisky with their significant other.
Thankfully, it’s perhaps no surprise at all though that the household chore that Brits dread the most is cleaning the toilet with 61% recoiling from the task.
The fact that nearly a third of the survey participants collectively said they’d rather grab a bottle of toilet duck than have sex is slightly bewildering!
Now, here’s the science bit… experts tells us that the sense of satisfaction and accomplishment we get when we complete a task is a result of our brain releasing happy hormones, providing pleasure and motivation.
They're the same natural chemicals that are released when we experience an orgasm.
Dr Mark Winwood, director of Psychological Services at AXA PPP healthcare, has previously explained, “When you’re active, your brain releases dopamine and serotonin – the ‘feel-good’ chemicals, which are known to improve your mood. In other words, you get a natural high.

"It also reduces harmful changes in the brain caused by stress and can help us to see possibilities, instead of feeling defeated.”
While psychotherapist and Counselling Directory member Katerina Georgiou told OK! how cleaning in particular is “quite a mindful activity” because “it’s focusing your attention on the task at hand”.
She added, “there's something primal about that and it engages our senses rather than our ruminations.”
Earlier this year a study of 2,000 adults revealed that they lie awake at night thinking about the household chores they have to do.
Perhaps that just goes to show how our desire for a tidy home can easily trump our desire for our partners!
