There’s no “butts” about it: These cigarettes are still bad for your body, but they’re A-OK for the planet.
South African company Smokey Treats is claiming to be the first cigarette manufacturer in history to produce biodegradable “eco-cigarettes,” CapeTown Etc reports.
Turns out, traditional cigarette butts are made mostly from plastic, and those tiny pieces of trash can really add up — to the tune of 2 million butts littered around the world ever minute.
But Smokey Treats’ Woodland Craft 20-pack of cigarettes, butts, wrapper and boxes, are made from 100 percent biodegradable unbleached wood pulp, which actually filters tar better than most standard cigs. Even the ink on the packaging is made from sustainable soy.
Smokey Treats founders Davide Scott and Adam van Wyngaarden also say their tobacco is ethically sourced in Africa and contains no additives. Plus, the duo is donating one percent of all profits to reforesting South Africa. So until a “healthy” cigarette exists, perhaps puffers will rest a little easier at night knowing their harmful habit won’t hurt the environment.
