Sorry to break it to you, but you won’t be seeing Issa Rae, Insecure co-creator and star, on the next bike over at a pricey spin class… even if there’s a coupon. She just doesn’t see the point. “Why am I buying 30 classes, and you’re giving me a five-dollar discount?” she asked. So, say goodbye to that celeb run-in fantasy (sigh).
Besides speaking truth to power on workout class pricing, the actress, writer, director, and all-around badass offered her take on talkative car rides and exes who won’t leave you alone as part of Women’s Health’s “Rant or Rave” series. It’s basically a list of the all things you should and shouldn’t bring up if you ever get to meet Issa so… you’re welcome.
On chatty Lyft drivers…
Insecure fans will recall that Issa’s character (also named Issa) had a stint as Lyft driver when she was strapped for cash, pioneering the super-fun-until-it-wasn’t “party Lyft.” While the fictional Issa offered Capri Sun juice pouches and a ton of conversation to her ridiculously attractive passengers, the real Issa (who actually applied to be a Lyft driver a few years ago per the Associated Press), wants none of it. Instead, she prefers a quiet ride.
“Lyft, I love you, but get with the program,” she said. Issa even wants a function that allows riders to decide whether or not they feel like engaging in convos about the weather.
Someone please HMU when that update is in effect.
On going dry for a month…
Issa admits she’s up for it. But, like most people after a long stretch of restriction, she finds herself making up for missed
cocktails time immediately after. The one dry June she committed to sounds like it went pretty well, but “drunk July immediately followed.”
Plus, she said, “Every time I stop drinking something fun happens.” (Ugh, doesn’t it always?)

If you’re ever lucky enough to meet Issa, mention thieboudienne, and you’re sure to become instant BFFs. It’s one of her favorite meals and Senegal’s national dish (Issa’s dad is Senegalese, FYI).
This flavorful combo of fish, rice, and veggies is rivaled only by hearty gumbo, the official dish of her mom’s home state: Louisiana. “If you put me on a desert island and gave me those two foods, I’d be set,” she told WH.
And for brownie points, throw in a little something about (vegan) banana pudding, her favorite dessert.
On natural hair care products…
Issa says she could have raved all day about products created for hair textures that haven’t been altered by chemicals and heat, but here’s the gist:
“First of all, where would I be without natural hair care products?” she asked, referencing the creams and jellies that give life to her frohawks and cornrows. “Shout out to lots of mainstream stores that have finally started carrying them.”
And while she’s excited these products are seeing waaaay more accessibility, don’t expect her to tell you the name of her top picks… well, at least not yet.

On exes who keep coming back…
Issa wants them to turn around and head right back where they came from. (SAME.)
“We ended for a reason. We had our time. You weren’t even that great in bed. Like, what are you coming back for?” she said about exes who randomly text “hey.” Word to the not-so-wise (because, come on, you broke up with Issa Rae?!): Once she’s through with you, don’t hit her up because there’s no chance in h*ll you’re getting a response.
