  • Joy realised she still had a spark with her childhood sweetheart after they met
  • And Alan’s colleague and lover Claire confessed she had developed feelings
  • Viewers said it would ‘end in tears’ and questioned if the marriage would survive

Wanderlust viewers predicted would ‘all end in tears’ for the couple at the centre of the BBC drama after an emotionally-charged twist at the end of last night’s episode.

The series follows the lives of therapist Joy Richards (Toni Collette) and her husband Alan (Steven Mackintosh), who decide to try and save their sexless marriage by sleeping with other people.

Alan, a teacher, embarked on a sexually-charged affair with his colleague, Claire (Zawe Ashton), while Joy enjoyed explicit romps with a man she met at the local leisure centre before moving onto a second lover.

Last night’s episode, the third in the series, saw three sex scenes take place, including a raunchy romp between Joy and Alan on the front seat of the family car after they had both been on dates with their respective lovers.

However fans were left questioning whether the married couple would survive their experiment of an open marriage after Alan confessed his feelings to Claire, despite pledging to Joy that he would only have a ‘no strings attached’ affair.

One viewer tweeted: ‘Oops some hearts are going to be broken.’

A second mused: ‘I’m watching this #wanderlust and it’s more than just shagging. Sex is more than just shagging, it’s complicated.’

A third stated simply: ‘I bet they will both end up with different partners at the end.’

Dozens of viewers claimed the idea was doomed from the start as couples can never have affairs without developing feelings. Pictured, examples of some of the reaction shared online

The first two episodes saw Joy embark on a sexual affair with a man named Marvin, including an explicit scene of mutual masturbation which made headlines as it featured the first female orgasm aired on the BBC.

However Marvin broke off the relationship after learning Joy only wanted a physical connection, deeming it to be ‘greedy’.

Last night Joy moved on with another lover named Marc, who was enthusiastic about her open marriage and desire for sex without a relationship.

Another scene saw the couple’s unlucky-in-love daughter Laura falling into bed with Jason, one of her mother’s patients whom she had bumped into on a night out

Joy also bumped into her childhood sweetheart Lawrence (Paul Kaye), pictured, who had moved back into the family home nearby to care for his father before he died

Joy later had a flashback of sex she’d had with her first love Lawrence in his childhood bedroom (pictured). She also realised there was still a spark between them years later

The mother-of-three also bumped into her childhood sweetheart Lawrence, who had moved back into the family home to care for his father before he died.

Joy was invited back to visit and had flashbacks to the first time they had sex as teenagers before later realising there was still a spark between them.

Lawrence, and she debated confessing this to him while at his childhood home.

The episode also saw Joy and Alan’s eldest daughter Laura have sex with her mother’s patient Jason after a string of unsuccessful dates with other men.

After enjoying dates with their respective partners, Joy and Alan (pictured) reunited and had sex in the family car in a deserted car park. However cracks in the plan started to show

While the idea of an open marriage initially appeared to be working smoothly, last night’s episode saw complications arise when Claire admitted she was developing feelings for Alan.

Alan turned down her advances, saying:’What you’re saying makes complete… the problem is the situation with me and Joy it doesn’t really allow for what it is you’re… Claire I’m really sorry. I can’t.’

Moments later the father-of-three met his wife after her date with Marc and the husband and wife had sex in the family car.

However the first true cracks in the plan began to show when Alan drove to Claire’s house to confess he also had feelings.

Despite initially rejecting his lover Claire’s advances, Alan later drove to her house late at night to confess he also had feelings for her, pictured

The pair later spoke inside Claire’s flat, pictured, prompting some viewers to speculate whether this would spell the end of Alan and Joy’s experiment – and their marriage

Wanderlust continues next Tuesday at 9pm on ITV
