The royal family has certainly gone through phases of popularity, with some members beloved by the public much more than others. Although Queen Elizabeth is still the reigning monarch of England, having just celebrated her 93rd birthday, there will come a time when someone else will have to take over the position. The queen’s son, Prince Charles, is next in line for the throne, but a royal family insider recently spoke out about someone that he thinks will be a far superior king.
Is Prince Charles popular with the public?
Charles is the oldest son of Queen Elizabeth and her husband, Prince Philip. He was born in November 1948 and is the longest-serving Prince of Wales in royal history. In 1981, Prince Charles married Diana Spencer, and the couple became quite beloved by the public and the press. However, this period of adoration didn’t last for Charles.
After rumors surfaced that Charles had been unfaithful to Princess Diana, who had become fiercely beloved by fans all over the world, public perception shifted. Newspaper articles portrayed him as not fit for royal duties and not a good family man, although he did seem utterly devoted to his two sons: Prince William and Prince Harry.
When he went through a bitter divorce with Diana, his popularity waned even further and hasn’t been able to recover. According to a recent report, even though Charles is first in line to the British throne, he ranks seventh in popularity of all royal family members. Furthermore, only about half of the British subjects have a positive view of Charles.
This is hardly good news for the Prince of Wales. That said, his son, William, is on the opposite end of the spectrum.
When could Prince William become king?
William was born into a world of wealth and privilege, but also a great responsibility. As the second in line to the throne, he grew up knowing that the weight of the country would one day rest on his shoulders. While he had the influence of his father, who reportedly loved his sons and tried to do what was best for them, he also learned a lot from his mother, Diana.
Although his father will in all likelihood assume the throne first, William could take the throne early if his father passes away unexpectedly or if he grants the throne to his son in his place, as some rumors suggest. Even if Charles does take the throne after his mother dies, William could realistically become king within the next 20 to 25 years, while he is still in his 50s. Whenever he becomes king, he definitely has many supporters.
Prince William has his mother’s charm
As one of the most popular members of the royal family, many people in the public and the press love and support William. Even those who know him personally have only positive things to say about his qualifications and personality. Recently, Paul Burrell, Diana’s former butler, spoke out about the future king, saying that he has Diana’s ability to listen to people and be understanding. These are qualities that could help bring the royal family more into the future. Burrell also stated that he believes the public would much prefer to see William and his wife, Kate Middleton, take over the throne, rather than Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles.
It certainly seems as though William and Kate are preparing for the moment when they must take the next step in their lives and guide the nation. The couple has been heavily involved with their royal duties over the past year, leading many royal fans to wonder if that big moment could be sooner rather than later.
