Avocados are a staple breakfast option in Australia, but unfortunately many go brown after only a day in the fridge. 

Now the internet has revealed a mind blowing trick that will have the green fruit remaining fresh for days.

Posting in a sustainable Facebook group, a woman shared a photo of what her avocado looked like after being in the fridge for 19 hours – and there was barely a speck in sight.

‘Brush melted coconut oil over your avocado to keep it sealed. The little bit of browning was already there before I sealed it,’ she said.

One commenter even went as far as to call her trick ‘life changing’.

According to Better Homes and Gardens, avocados turn brown because they contain an enzyme called polyphenol oxidase, which when it comes in contact with oxygen, makes it turn this shade. 

This is why the coconut oil trick the group member shared works so well as it reduces its contact with air.

Another trick that will keep the gem fresh is lemon and lime juice, which is a strong antioxidant that will dramatically slow the browning process.

All you have to do is squeeze a small amount of fresh juice over the avocado which will keep the avocado from browning for at least a day. 

Previously, FEMAIL revealed there is one easy way to ripen avocados in one to two days. 

All you have to do is put them into a brown paper bag along with a couple of apples or ripe bananas and close up the bag with a food clip.

These fruits also release ethylene gas which, when concentrated in the paper bag, will cause your avocados to ripen even faster than if they were on their own.

Store them on the kitchen top and count down the days until you get to smash into a deliciously ripe avocado.
