No one can do what Beyonce does but Ariana has undoubtedly carved her own lane too.
She’s proven the ability to engage with a crowd that might not be entirely her own like a tour show.
Even if pop’s not really your thing, you can’t deny that, in the past year alone, there’s been at least one Ariana Grande song you’ve bopped your head to on the radio, in the car or in the shower.
It’s why she was, hands down, the perfect headliner to close each Coachella 2019 weekend.
Joining Ariana on this year’s headline bill are Childish Gambino and Tame Impala.
Both are always a treat and received rave reviews but their buzz was nothing like the anticipation that built for Ariana’s set on Sunday.
In fact, you could argue that interest in Coachella’s line-ups had started to wane until Beyonce breathed new life into the brand.
Bey was originally a 2017 headliner but fell pregnant with twins so pushed her performance back to the following year, allowing Lady Gaga to step up to the stage first.
Did anyone consider that perhaps the reason for the line-ups going stale year after year were because… shock, there were no women?
Some of the most successful popstars in the past decade have either not gotten a look in by Coachella, or made a guest appearance during a male performer’s set and stole the show away.
Rihanna briefly joined Calvin Harris to perform We Found Love in 2016 and it’s still a memorable performance today, while Katy Perry was likely a missed opportunity in her heyday.
If Coachella want to take a slightly less poppier approach in the coming years, they need look no further than Billie Eilish who is drawing fans from all corners of music and, in a few years, will probably be great headline material.
As long as they do fill the female void in the interim.
Ultimately, whether it’s #Beychella or #Arichella, the past three female headliners have proven that women – and pop – should undoubtedly have a seat at Coachella’s table.
And long may they sit there.
