AceShowbiz –Cardi B has been accused by viewers of lip-syncing her performance at Sunday’s, February 10 61st Grammy Awards.
The hip-hop star became the first woman to win in the Best Rap Album category with her record Invasion of Privacy at the U.S. music prizegiving – and sang her hit “Money” at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
However, some eagle-eyed viewers claimed she had broken Grammy rules by pre-recording her vocals and miming.
“Cardi B can’t even lip sync well,” one bemused Twitter user complained. “Talentless compared to some of the other nominees.”
Others were unimpressed with her ostentatious rap and dance routine – which featured her twerking on a piano – with one writing there was “nothing exciting” about watching a performer lip-sync, while another added, “Cardi B didn’t even sing – why’d she have to lip sync a rap?? That was a waste of my time and just an excuse to hump a piano.”
The rapper’s die-hard fans defended her against the fakery allegations though – stating that the controversy was the result of confusion over the muting of swear words from the track.
“Cardi did not lip sync. Do yall even know the words? What you saw was her saying the cuss words that they didn’t play,” one of her defenders tweeted, adding that she “rocked” and that it was the best performance of the night.
The 26-year-old musician is yet to publicly comment on the lip-syncing claims.
In 2012, the Grammy Awards’ audio coordinator Michael Abbott told the TV Technology website that lip-syncing was banned – although artists can use technological aids to improve their live sound.
“Unlike almost every other televised awards show in the U.S., the Grammys are committed to having every microphone on stage be live,” Abbott said.
