Inside Alex Rodriguez and ex-wife Cynthia Scurtis’ messy relationship

Everything appeared to be rainbows and butterflies for ex-spouses and co-parents Alex Rodriguez and Cynthia Scurtis… until Jenny from the Block rolled up onto the scene and into A-Rod’s heart. Since then, things have been tense, to say the least. Between alleged infidelity, child support squabbles, and lawsuits, it’s possible this blended family really does put the “fun” in dysfunctional.

But let’s take it back to the beginning. It all started on July 7, 2008 when Scurtis filed for divorce from her long time husband, as reported by the New York Post. Allegedly the filing came on the heels of A-Rod engaging in multiple late night rendezvous with the Queen of Pop herself, Madonna. According to the divorce documents filed in Miami-Dade county, the scorned wife filed on the premise of her “husband’s extra marital affairs and other marital misconduct.” The documents filed by Scurtis also stated that “Alex has emotionally abandoned his wife and children and has left her with no choice but to divorce him.” Shots fired!

Scurtis requested primary custody of the couple’s two daughters, Natasha and Ella, use of their Coral Gables mansion, one vehicle, and of course, alimony and child support, according to the Post. The documents also asserted that “the husband has the fiscal capacity to continue his high style of living, but the wife does not.” But that’s only the beginning. Keep reading to learn about all the messy deets.

Alex Rodriguez and Cynthia Scurtis co-parent well at times

Even after a contentious split, it appears that Cynthia Scurtis and Alex Rodriguez were eventually able to move forward and co-parent as a team… at least, sometimes. Scurtis went on to find new love with a Florida realtor, Angel Nicolas, and gave birth to another daughter, Camilla. Ex-hubby Alex Rodriguez even spent time with the tot, as evidenced by his Instagram account, on which he shared a picture of him enjoying an evening with his two daughters as well as their half-sister Camilla in May of 2019. “#DaddyDateNight with a plus-1! #Tashi #EllaBella #Cami,” the caption read.

The following month, the blended family made headlines again when the exes, along with Rodriguez’s new partner Jennifer Lopez and her two children, attended eldest daughter Natasha’s middle school graduation. As reported by People, A-Rod took to Instagram to share a photo of the whole fam-damily showing up and showing out for Natasha. “How is my beautiful angel going to be a freshman in high school?!” the proud father gushed.

Jennifer Lopez and Cynthia Scurtis clashed over child support

So how did a seemingly positive situation — dare we even say Brady Bunch vibe — turn so nasty? Two words: child support.

In 2018, TMZ broke the news that Alex Rodriguez was allegedly seeking to substantially reduce the amount he doles out in child support and alimony each month. Shortly after, Cynthia Scurtis issued a statement via Page Six in which she did not hold back about where the issues were stemming from.

“All I can tell you, there’s been a shift, and I’m not sure what to attribute it to,” Scurtis professed. “Alex has dated some wonderful women since our divorce, many of whom have had positive relationships with our children. Alex and I have worked well trying to create a stable environment for our daughters and there has never been an issue. Until now.”

Page Six also reported that Rodriguez’s fiancée, Jennifer Lopez, caught his ex-wife by surprise when she showed up front and center at the mediation to discuss the potential reduction in support, though that claim has never been substantiated. One source, however, went as far as to speculate that J.Lo was “driving the bus.” It’s also rumored that Lopez insisted that the support be drastically cut to a meager $10K a month from the purported $100,000 his ex-wife was used to receiving. YIKES.

Alex Rodriguez's former brother-in-law sued him

According to New York Daily News, Cynthia Scurtis’ brother, Constantine Scurtis, inserted himself smack dab in the middle of the drama when he filed a lawsuit against Alex Rodriguez in 2014. The angry former brother-in-law claimed that in 2008, Rodriguez conned him out of a real estate company they’d previously started together, shortly after his marriage to Scurtis’ sister went south.

Page Six reported that Cynthia lamented being in the middle of such a sensitive issue and questioned whether or not the reduction in financial support was in direct response to the lawsuit. “Of course [the lawsuit] is a sore subject,” Scurtis maintained. “I’m in the middle of my ex-husband, who I still care for very much, and my baby brother, who I love. It’s a difficult spot for me to be in. But I’m not sure if the lawsuit is the real motivation for what Alex is doing now.” The lawsuit is still pending, according to NJ.com.

Will this modern family ever find true peace? The jury is still out… both literally and figuratively.
