Lil Yachty Disses VMAs for 'Oprah's Bank Account' Snub

When its music video first came out, a lot of people were buzzing about rapper Lil Yachty’s “Oprah’s Bank Account.” The song featured Drake and DaBaby had a memorable video to go along with it. Now, since it didn’t get nominated for any MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), Lil Yachty is calling them out.

Lil Yachty released ‘Oprah’s Bank Account’ with Drake and DaBaby earlier this year

Back in March, “Oprah’s Bank Account” was was a surprise release from Lil Yachty as the first single from his album, Lil Boat 3. The single features an Oprah reference in the hook: “You look as good as Oprah’s bank account / I just wanna take you out.” On the same day the song was released, the video also dropped. It featured Lil Yachty portraying Oprah in skits featuring Drake and DaBaby. Director X helmed the music video.

In the video, Lil Yachty’s Oprah parody character, “Boprah,” taps into the legendary talk show host’s most iconic moments, such as “you get a car, you get a car, and you get a car!”

For one part of the music video that features, Drake they joke about new music and today’s rappers, specifically mumble rap, which Lil Yachty makes. During this, Yachty pokes fun and the perception that people have of his music.

Yachty as Boprah asks Drake, “This new generation of music, these new rappers. The mumble rap, what do you think about it?”

Drake says, “Literally, writing nursery rhymes that nobody can understand. I think it’s progressive and innovative. I think at the forefront of that movement of music that should be forgotten about is Lil Yach-ee…that guy is just an innovator of music that should never be referenced or heard by human beings again.”

The rapper takes issue with the VMAs not nominating the song

On a recent Instagram live session, Lil Yachty aired out his grievances about the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards not giving the “Oprah’s Bank Account” video any awards.

He said, “I be doing some s**t, putting my all in some s**t. People be trying to shit on that and try to discredit some of the things that I’ve done. Or discredit some of the s**t I done did…try to downplay it or like, try to make it seem as if it’s nothing. Nah that s**t is wack, bro. I don’t know, that’s all I gotta say. That s**t is wack. VMAs is dumb wack for that s**t. Nominations, all that s**t is corny. N****s don’t be giving me no f*****g respect. I don’t f*k with that.”

Though the VMAs didn’t nominate the song, the inspiration behind it, Oprah, approves of it. In May told the Associated Press, “I love it. I love it. I loveeeeee it! Yes, I love it! I haven’t seen the video. But it’s nice to be in a Drake song no matter what — especially for your bank account, OK!”

Ariana Grande (9), Lady Gaga (9), Billie Eilish (6), and The Weeknd (6) lead nominations for this year’s VMAs which will air on Sunday, Aug. 30 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
