Unless you’ve been living under a rock this week, you’ll know that Meghan Markle’s father Thomas won’t be attending the royal wedding on Saturday as he has undergone heart surgery.
Now, Meghan’s sister Samantha has spoken to The Sun about their father’s condition and said the family have not had any support from Kensington Palace.
“He was upset. He wanted to go. But his doctor had the overruling opinion he needed surgery. So he’s smart enough to know, ‘This is life-threatening’,” she told the newspaper.
“It’s all been so heartbreaking and now my father’s in surgery. I don’t even think he’s awake yet.”
When asked about reports that Kensington Palace had offered significant support to her father, who lives in Mexico, Samantha said they were untrue and she had been sending him money.
“That is not true or he would not have been living in his place. He’d have had a reliable vehicle,” she said.
“He’d have been with security. I have receipts showing I’ve sent my father money twice by MoneyGram because he needed it.
“He is badly in need of help. I’m dreadfully worried about him. He’s completely on his own,” Samantha added.
However, Samantha added that she was “not blaming” her sister.
Speaking about the paparazzi photos Thomas is reported to have staged, Samantha said she brokered the deal for the pics and she was doing it to “defend” her father against the paparazzi.
Samantha also confirmed reports that her father was devastated by comments made by his son Tom Jr, who warned his sister against marrying Harry in an open letter published by In Touch Weekly.
“He’s been so hurt by Tom,” Samantha said. “He was acting as if he was a spokesman for the family. My father wants nothing to do with him.”
Digital Spy has reached out to Kensington Palace for comment.
The wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will take place at St George’s Chapel in the grounds of Windsor Castle this Saturday (May 19).
It is unclear now who will be walking Meghan down the aisle, but Meghan’s mother Doria Ragland will be in attendance.
In the UK, the ceremony will be broadcast on the BBC, Sky News and ITV. In the US, over 200 cinemas will be holding screenings.
Meanwhile, it’s emerged on Wednesday night (May 16) that Samantha is reportedly in hospital after suffering a broken ankle and fracturing her knee in a car crash near their home in Florida.
