Nick Cannon Reveals His Diet

Nick Cannon revealed his diet in a recent interview, and it’s not as controversial as you might think.

If you’ve ever taken a moment to check out Nick Cannon’s Instagram account, you’ll know that eating healthy and fitness are both very important to him. They have to be. The 37-year-old rapper slash producer slash actor slash comedian was diagnosed with Lupus in 2012, and staying fit is the only way he knows how to stay out of the hospital.

Lupus is an autoimmune disease that causes the body’s own immune system to go haywire and attack apparently healthy tissue. Normally it’d just go after bad stuff, like viruses, bacteria, or cancerous cells, but for whatever reason, Lupus sufferers have an immune system that can’t tell the difference.

For some people, Lupus just attacks specific parts. For Nick, it’s more diffuse. Some mornings he wakes up in such terrible full-body pain that he can barely move.

After his diagnosis, Cannon completely changed his fitness routine. Working out became an every day, no excuses thing and his diet went from the usual assortment of fast foods to only the healthiest of ingredients.

In an interview with GQ, Cannon revealed just how restrictive his diet was. In the beginning, Cannon went for almost a whole year without eating any sodium or processed foods. He even cut out green vegetables simply because they had too much vitamin K. Tracking down what triggers a Lupus attack can be difficult, and Cannon found that good old vitamin K can sometimes be a trigger.

Nowadays, Cannon’s diet isn’t so bad. He still avoids processed foods and pork, but now just sticks to what he calls “clean foods”. We’re thinking that mostly means he avoids junk food.

Or maybe not. Cannon also revealed that he’s a big proponent of “alkaline water”–that is, water with a pH content slightly above neutral. This makes the water slightly soapy, so maybe he means foods without too much acid in them?

The rest of Cannon’s routine involves working out. A lot. On the set of his show, Nick Cannon Presents: Wild ‘N Out, anyone can call a “fire drill”, which means everyone on set has to drop and do 50 push-ups. That’s pretty hardcore, but it ensures that Cannon does all his pushups for a day.
