Cheap family holidays in Tenerife – where to stay on the island

As a result, prices for family hotels during the summer season tend to be high – but that doesn’t mean bargains can’t be found.

So where to visit in Tenerife if you have a family? There are family-friendly resorts dotted across the island, but where you pick will probably define your holiday.

Playa de las Americas is probably the liveliest resort, or the popular Los Cristianos in the south west of the island.

For those looking for more lush greenery, Puerto de la Cruz in the north is also a good shout  and for a slightly quieter feel, Costa Adeje is a good introduction to the island.

Playa de las Americas

  • Seven night stay Bungalows Barranco from £335pp
  • Seven night stay Las Piramides resort from £348pp

Playa de las Americas is probably the liveliest resort, with plenty of restaurants, bars, beaches, nightclubs and activities to keep everyone busy.

Earning the crown of Tenerife’s party capital is no small feat, and visitors who book a holiday to the resort will see why.

And that’s not all, as beautiful resorts, restaurants and bars at bargain prices make this Canary Island favourite an even sweeter deal.

Through TUI, we have found a one-bedroom apartment that sleeps four in Las Piramides resort from £348pp on a self-catering basis including flights, departing Edinburgh on August 07. Find this offer here.

Or, stay at Bungalows Barranco –  less than five minutes' walk from the famous Veronicas Strip from £335pp in a one-bedroom apartment, including flights from London Stansted on August 19. Find this offer here.

Los Cristianos

  • Seven nights in Labranda Oasis Mango hotel from £354pp
  • Seven nights at Coral Los Alisios from £409pp

Los Cristianos in the south west of the island, near Reina Sofia airport, is also a very busy and popular resort with Brits – but less hedonistic than Playa de las Americas.

The town – which dates back to the 16th century – has two great beaches, and a harbour that offers a range of excursions for tourists, including dolphin and whale watching.

The restaurants along the promenade offer everything from traditional Spanish dishes to British favourites, and there are plenty of boutique shops in the lanes running from the main strip.

For restless kids, the popular Aqualand and Siam Park are also nearby.

Through TUI, we have found a one-bedroom apartment that sleeps four in Labranda Oasis Mango hotel from £354pp on a self-catering basis including flights, departing Edinburgh on August 21.  Find this offer here.

The newly-refurbished Labranda Oasis Mango is in a quiet spot on the edge of Los Cristianos on a hillside, 15 minutes stroll from a sandy beach and the busy harbour front.

Each one-bedroom apartment comes with a kitchenette, lounge area, balcony, bathroom and twin room, with a double sofa-bed in the lounge.

Or, stay in a one-bedroom apartment at the Coral Los Alisios in the quiet hills behind Los Cristianos, costing £409pp on a self-catering basis with flights from Edinburgh on July 31.

The Canarian-style apartments are 400m from the nearest shops and restauramts, and a 20-minute walk from the sandy beach and bar-lined promenade. Find this offer here.

Costa Adeje

  • Seven nights at Neptuno Costa Adeje from £331pp
  • Seven nights at Viglia Park from £359pp

Costa Adeje is one of the more upmarket resorts in Tenerife – a bit more exclusive, expensive and family friendly than other big destinations like Playa de las Americas.

With luxury hotels and apartments, and umpteen fine dining restaurants, it's fancy enough to attract the likes of David and Victoria Beckham.

Backed by picturesque volcanic hills and looking out over well-kept sandy beaches, the resort gives off a laid-back vibe despite its size.

It doesn't have to be overwhelmingly pricey though – there are still some cheap options for accommodation – we've found a week's stay including flights from £331pp.

The price would pay for a one-bed superior apartment at Neptuno Costa Adeje – a cheep and cheerful complex set in tropical gardens, with flights from London Stansted on August 19. Find this offer here.

The complex offers an outdoor swimming pool, gym, badminton court and free courtesy bus service to the beach and resort centre.

Or, stay just up the road in Puerto De Santiago – close enough to Costa Adeje to enjoy the amenities, but far enough away to get a better deal on accommodation.

A seven-night stay at Viglia Park in the resort costs £359pp in a one-bedroom apartment with flights from Edinburgh on August 7.

Los Silos

  • Seven nights at Finca la Hacienda Rural Hotel from £326pp
  • Seven nights at Apartamento Vistas de Garachico from £383pp

If you're looking for a peaceful holiday, Los Silos is the perfect Tenerife destination.

It is a small town in the region of Isla Baja, to the north of the island, with a distinct lack of loud bars and nightclubs.

Take a stroll along the quiet promenade with its tradition Canarian architecture, spend a day at the beach or go hiking in the trails behind the town leading towards the Teno mountains.

We have found a seven-night self-catering two-bed apartment at Finca la Hacienda Rural Hotel in the hills behind Los Silos from £326pp including flights, departing London Stansted on August 19.

Set in the hills, surrounded by fruit trees, the nine-apartment hotel also has its own restaurant serving typical Canarian food. Find this offer here.

Or, have you own apartment with the Apartamento Vistas de Garachico in nearby Garachico, which comes with its own plunge pool and views of the bay.

Seven nights at the two-bed apartment costs from £383pp, including flights from London Gatwick on July 27. Find this offer here.

Puerto de la Cruz

  • Seven nights at Estrella Del Norte from £425pp
  • Seven nights at Apartamentos Casablanca from £392pp

Traditionally a small fishing village on the north coast, Puerto De La Cruz has retained some of its authentic feel, with a crumbling 18th-century fort and a quaint harbour.

It also boasts man-made beaches of volcanic black sand and the Lago Martianez, a saltwater pool complex created by famous artist Cesar Manrique.

From the town you can surf, paraglide, dive and hit a few rounds of golf and many, many more activities, above and below sea level, including the restaurants and bars with live entertainment.

Recently, the resort has been the location for ITV dating show Take Me Out’s Isle of Fernando, but it has also played host to the likes of Bill Clinton, Alicia Keys and Michael Jackson.

We have found a seven-night self-catering apartment that sleeps four near the resort from £425pp including flights, departing London Gatwick on July 25.

Estrella Del Norte, the new apartment complex in the centre of Icod de los Vinos is 340 m above sea level, with a family-run restaurant in the complex serving a range of local specialities.
 Find this offer here.

Or, stay at Apartamentos Casablanca – family-friendly holiday apartments featuring an outdoor pool, a sauna, and a fitness centre in the heart of Puerto de la Cruz.

Seven nights costs from £392pp including fights from London Gatwick on July 27. Find this offer here.
