Rooms any good? Lovely. We had one adjacent to an external door so we could get straight outside with our puppy Layla during the night. Clean and comfortable with a lovely iron bed. There were tea and coffee making facilities and rather than providing vile long-life UHT there was the farm-fresh stuff in a fridge. The home made shortbread was melt in the mouth and the great views of the dale are priceless. Oh…and the room was stumbling distance to the bar.
Eat here or grab a pizza? You've not got a lot of choice really…you are in the middle of nowhere so it is eat here…or bring your own picnic! Luckily the food is fantastic. The owners source many ingredients locally. And the prices aren't bad for the quality of the food. The menu is perfect for hungry walkers and the service is great. We had the loin of venison with home made game sausage which was amazing!
What else? The breakfast is brilliant – the sausage sandwiches set you up perfectly for a walk. The bar staff are happy to help with local maps of the area and it would be a crime to come here without exploring. This village may be small but is so picturesque it was used as a backdrop for the vet series, All Creatures Great and Small and mini series A Woman of Substance.
So, you'd go back? Definitely. The locals are friendly, you can't beat the picturesque countryside, dogs are welcome and the food is fantastic. And did I mention there's no phone signal!?
What's the damage? Double and twin rooms start at £105 per room per night and include full English breakfast. Dogs are an extra £20 per night.
