Royal weddings are star-studded affairs with impressive titles, maybe a celebrity — Victoria and David Beckham, perhaps — and political figures. But no politicians scored invites to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s wedding. Ahead, find out the political figures who were notably absent from the royal wedding. Plus, learn exactly why they weren’t invited to one of the biggest events of 2018 (pages 5 and 6).

- Fun fact: Princess Diana came over to Justin Trudeau’s house as a child to swim laps in his family’s pool.
Historically, Canadian politicians have had good relationships with the British royal family, Carolyn Harris, royal historian and author, told Express. And Justin Trudeau’s relationship with the royal family started long ago. His dad, former prime minister, Pierre Trudeau, attended the wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. As prime minister, Justin has met with Prince Harry on numerous occasions, making it a surprise he didn’t get an invitation to the wedding.
Hint: Historically, U.S. presidents don’t attend royal weddings.

- Fun fact: Donald Trump still hasn’t met Queen Elizabeth II.
“There weren’t heads of state invited to William and Kate’s wedding,” Duncan Larcombe, a royal biographer, told Town & Country. Foreign heads of state don’t often make appearances at royal weddings. And Donald Trump didn’t get invited to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding but he did send a gift, according to People. It’s tradition for U.S. presidents to send bowls to the British royal family as wedding gifts.
Hint: This former U.S. president didn’t get an invitation either.

- Fun fact: Obama offered to interview Prince Harry for the BBC instead of being interviewed himself because Prince Harry was so nervous.
Former president, Barack Obama, met Prince Harry in 2016 during a visit to Washington, D.C., according to The Telegraph. The two bonded while Harry promoted the Invictus Games. The following year, Prince Harry interviewed Obama for the BBC, according to The New York Times. Their relationship made everyone wonder if Obama would be invited to Prince Harry’s wedding. Nevertheless, Obama didn’t get the golden ticket to the royal wedding. Learn why on page 5.
Hint: Not even this UK leader got an invitation to the wedding.

- Fun fact: Theresa May meets with Queen Elizabeth II on a weekly basis, according to the Royal Family.
Anyone who has seen The Crown knows the prime minister has a close relationship with the British royal family. Historically, prime ministers have regular meetings with the queen. But this working relationship doesn’t mean prime ministers get to attend royal weddings. Theresa May, the prime minister of the United Kingdom, didn’t snag an invite to the royal wedding.

Why political figures weren’t invited

- Fun fact: Prince William and Kate Middleton invited political leaders to their wedding.
“It has been decided that an official list of political leaders – both UK and international – is not required for Prince Harry and Ms. Markle’s wedding,” a royal family spokesperson told Harper’s Bazaar UK. The couple supposedly made this decision because Harry wasn’t obligated to invite political leaders because he’s not a direct heir to the throne.
Hint: Possibly, the real reason politicians weren’t invited to the royal wedding.
Invitations — or the lack thereof — could’ve caused drama

- Fun fact: Only one member of Meghan Markle’s family attended her wedding.
A number of factors may have contributed to politicians being snubbed from the royal wedding. First, St. George’s Chapel is small. Second, as mentioned previously, Prince Harry isn’t a direct heir to the throne. But the third reason may be the real reason why no politicians were invited. If one political leader were invited, say Donald Trump, and not another, diplomatic relations could’ve gone sour, and taken attention away from the bride and groom on their wedding day.
