Sneak peek at Manchester Airport’s new pier as it opens to passengers

Manchester Airport is currently undergoing a huge £1billion transformation, and now the UK travel hub has unveiled the first phase of the makeover.

In fact, passengers can now make use of the sleek new pier which connects to Terminal 2 which opened to the public this week – and the airport has shared a video offering a walkthrough to show just how the journey will go.

The 216m-long pier will offer passengers panoramic views of the airfield, and is set to be used by all of the airlines currently operating out of Terminal 2, including TUI Airways.

In fact, it was TUI which operated the first flights from the pier to Funchal and Naples, with more flights to be gradually introduced over coming weeks as the addition becomes fully operational.

It took 18 months to build the pier with over 300 panes of glass, as well as 11 gates and airbridges boasting over 1,400 seats.

Further piers will open in 2022 and 2024.

It marks a big milestone in the exciting venture, whose second phase will focus on Terminal 2.

Construction is already underway and is expected to see the terminal more than double in size, including over 40 new food and beverage outlets and shops.

It will also see new security halls introduced with up-to-date technology.

The terminal expansion is expected to open to the public in summer 2020, at which point the existing building will be closed for refurbishment until 2022.

Andrew Cowan, CEO of Manchester Airport, said: "Today is a significant milestone for Manchester Airport as we deliver the first phase of the biggest investment we have made in our 80 year history.

"We are delighted to wave off the first handful of flights from the new pier, as we build up to bringing it into full operation in the days ahead.

"What that means is our customers can start to enjoy the new facilities, at the same time as getting a taste of what to expect from the next stages of our £1bn transformation programme.

"Today is just the start.  Over the coming years we will transform the airport for all of our customers, giving the North the world class airport it deserves.

"The investment we are making and the range of destinations we connect to, in all corners of the world, underlines the vital role Manchester Airport plays in creating jobs and driving growth across the North of England.

"Having first put a spade in the ground in July 2017, a huge amount of work has gone into getting our new pier and multi-storey car park ready to open today and I would like to thank all of our colleagues and delivery partners for their efforts."
