Wine merchant to the Queen has opened a shop in a TRAIN STATION (so beleaguered commuters can at least drown their sorrows with top tipples)

  • Berry Bros & Rudd has a section inside an ‘Urban Express’ at London Bridge
  • It sells crisps, soft drinks – and a fine Argentinian red for £41
  • Berry Bros dates back to the 17th century and also supplies Prince Charles 

The trains running in and out of London Bridge may not run on time terribly often – but at least commuters using the station can now drown their sorrows with jaw-dropping wine.

That’s because wine merchant to the Queen and Prince Charles – Berry Bros. & Rudd – now has an outlet there.

That’s astonishing enough – but what makes it even more surreal is that wines from the ultra-prestigious merchant are sold amid shelves of crisps, soft drinks and chocolate bars.

Commuters at the railway station would be forgiven for doing a double take.

Urban Express also offers ‘good to go’ deals, which include a sandwich, a choice of crisps or confectionery and a drink.

The wine on offer is sold in full, half and quarter bottles (perfect for train travel) and includes less expensive offerings such as a Rioja for £11.99 and a merlot-based red for £8.99.

But for those commuters who are feeling flush, there’s a New Zealand pinot noir for £25.99 and a red from Argentina – from the Pulenta Estate – that costs a cool £41.49.

The Urban Express is located next to platforms six and seven. Commuters might be forgiven for doing a double take when they see the fine wine inside

Berry Bros & Rudd began trading in 1698 in London’s St James’s Street and over the past 300 years has developed a reputation for selling the very finest wine available.

It has a new shop in London’s Pall Mall (its headquarters is still at St James’s Street), as well as in Basingstoke, Hong Kong, Singapore and Tokyo. 

Its wines can also be found in Virgin Atlantic’s business class cabins. 

Some of its most expensive bottles cost around £2,000 and its stock is carefully managed by no less than five ‘masters of wine’.

The Urban Express outlet is run by SSP and its CEO, Simon Smith, said: ‘These innovative brands have been carefully selected to complement the offer at the station and meet the aspirations of Network Rail and its customers.’
