Active shooter at Texas high school as police swarm building

An active shooter has been reported at a high school in Santa Fe, Texas, as the sound of gunshots sent students and staff scrambling for safety.

Police were called to reports of gunshots at Santa Fe High School at about 8am local time.

Students told local media that fire alarms went off and gunshots were heard as they left their classrooms.

The Santa Fe Independent School District said in a statement: "This morning an incident occurred at the high school involving an active shooter.

"The district has initiated a lockdown.

"We will send out additional information as soon as it is available."

Santa Fe is about 30 miles south of Houston.
