Bittersweet 1994 love story voted UK’s favourite feelgood film

Unlike a box of chocolates, it seems you know what you’re going to get with Forrest Gump – a great movie to make you happy.

The Oscar winner starring Tom Hanks has been voted the best feelgood film.

The 1994 movie follows Forrest through the decades as he takes part in some of history’s biggest moments.

It is the bittersweet love story that captured the hearts, as well as the legendary line: “My mom always said ‘life is like a box of chocolates – you never know what you’re gonna get’.”

Second in the poll was 1985 time travel hit Back to the Future, starring Michael J Fox.

Third was 1964 Disney musical Mary Poppins, starring Julie Andrews.

Happiness expert Dr Cliff Arnall said: “Life can feel pretty overwhelming for many when work, exams and family pressures fill head space. Taking the time to watch an uplifting film is one of the easiest ways of escaping from all of that.

“Giving ourselves permission to switch off our worry buttons and have our imagination buttons pressed is highly therapeutic.”

Just two of the films in the top 10 are from this decade – 2011 comedy drama The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, with Dame Judi Dench, and the 2017 version of Beauty and the Beast, starring Emma Watson.

The survey found nearly a quarter of Brits watch a movie each Sunday to help beat the blues about the weekend drawing to a close.

The poll of 2,000 people is part of the Must See #FilmsWithFeels campaign which is aiming to boost spirits.

Its ambassador, Loose Women star Stacey Solomon, heaped praise on Forrest Gump, adding: “One minute I’m howling and the next I’m in tears… it’s just so touching.”
