The report revealed more than 1,200 women have suffered from “serious” health problems as a result of the op in the UK in the past three years.
Health risks include ruptured implants, pain, disfigurement, allergic reactions – and even fears of a heightened cancer risk.
There have been several large-scale clinical studies of breast implants, which previously found low rates of serious complications and high patient satisfaction rates.
But the latest data, gathered from around the world and published in the Guardian, was obtained by Freedom of Information (FOI) requests, analysis of official stats, and interviews with patients and medics.
The investigation reportedly found there have been more than 1,200 serious incidents linked to breast implants which have been reported in the UK since 2015 and links between popular textured implants and a rare type of cancer.
French doctors were advised to stop using that particular type of implant because of a potential link with anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL)
The probe also found huge numbers of women have disappeared from clinical trials designed to monitor safety.
The investigation was a global project involving the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ).
