Brit tourist in Ayia Napa ‘kills mother with a beach buggy while drunk’

A British tourist allegedly ran over and killed a Swedish mother while drunk driving a beach buggy at a tourist hotspot in Cyprus.

The 25-year-old allegedly hit and killed Camilla Christina Pamdahl, 46, at a pedestrian crossing in resort town Ayia Napa.

According to local police, the man allegedly hit Ms Pamdahl while attempting to overtake a stopped car while drunk.

He reportedly fled the scene on foot completely unhurt after the crash.

A man was arrested by Cyprus police a few hours later, at around 11:30 pm local time.

The incident occurred on Wednesday night, around 6pm local time, on Nissi Avenue in the Mediterranean retreat. Ms Pamdahl was on holiday with her five-year-old daughter.

A spokesperson for Cyprus police said: "A young man driving the rental buggy overtook a stopped car, and hit the woman."

Ms Pamdahl was taken to Famagusta general hospital but she was declared dead on arrival.

According to Cyprus Mail, the police spokesperson said the man had four times the legal limit of alcohol in his system.

He also tested positive for cannabis, reports said.

The driver is expected to appear in court later on Thursday to be remanded in custody.

The mother, who is from the Västra Götaland County in western Sweden, had left her daughter at their hotel under the supervision of an employee to go buy some groceries, reports the Cyprus Times.

Pictures from the scene show the mangled wreck of the rental buggy the Brit was said to have been driving.

Police have since contacted the child's father, who is abroad, to travel to Cyprus to collect her.

The child is currently with officials of the Welfare Office, and a child psychologist.

The Swedish Foreign ministry has confirmed Ms Pamdahl's death.
