A driver was busted for leaving a 2-year-old alone in a school bus for over an hour in Brooklyn, authorities said Friday.
Ralph Jeannis, 35, was arrested for allegedly abandoning the girl on the bus early Wednesday morning near Lenox Road and East 94th Street in Brownsville, according to court documents.
A passerby heard the crying toddler around 9 a.m. — about an hour and a half later — and further noticed she was alone on the bus, law enforcement officials said.
The bus bears the sign: “The vehicle has been checked for sleeping children,” according to a photograph published by local news site BoroPark24.com.
The girl was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation and returned to her mother.
“I’m so sorry,” Jeannis told police, according to court documents. “I thought the bus was empty.”
He added that the bus matron had checked the bus “and said it was fine.”
Jeannis had been transporting children to Bais Yaakov BP in Borough Park on the morning of the incident, according to the news report, but he did not work directly for the school.
He was charged with endangering the welfare of a child and released without bail, according to a spokesman for the Brooklyn DA’s office.
