A 14-year-old high school student is in custody accused of shooting a classmate in the arm before dumping his rifle in the desert.
Deputies swarmed Highland High School at 7am PT and arrested a ‘Hispanic juvenile’ at a nearby shopping center 20 minutes later.
The victim, 15 and a student, was wounded as he was getting out of the car that brought him to the campus, according to local media. He is expected to fully recover in hospital.

After the shooting the alleged gunman called his father to say he fired his gun in the air and was headed to a grocery store near campus.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Jim McDonnell said Friday that the 14-year-old’s father then called a family friend who’s an off-duty police officer and told him where the boy was.

‘About a minute later, I get a call from them saying there were gunshots,’ Munoz told CNN.
Students began barricading themselves in their classrooms and piling sofas and desks in front of the doors, according to one parent.
Dozens of cop cars swarmed the high school and officers began going from classroom to classroom.

Deputies also responded to reports of a shooter at Manzanita Elementary School seven miles away but these were found to be false.
Brett Stubbs, a teacher, tweeted about the incident, although it is unclear if he was in the school at the time.
‘Active shooter at my High school Highland high in Palmdale, CA. I pray everyone is okay,’ he wrote.
