Terrifying footage shows a quick-thinking lifeguard rescue a little girl who was slowly drowning in a crowded pool.

The youngster can be seen repeatedly disappearing under artificial waves in the 90-second clip, believed to have been filmed in the US.

She thrashes her arms around while desperately trying to keep her head above the water before a lifeguard spots the distressed child and dives in to help.

The female lifeguard reaches the little girl just in time and quickly helps her onto a long float then drags her to dry land.

She had been bobbing around under the artificial waves crashing across the pool for at least 30 seconds without anyone noticing she was in trouble.

The child could barely touch the bottom and can be seen ducking under the water and using her feet to try to push her head up above the surface.

At one point she can be seen reaching to her face, seemingly trying to hold her nose to stop herself from inhaling the water.

According to water safety experts, almost half of children who drown die within 25 yards of a parent or other adult.

But this rescue was thankfully successful and the clip ends with the little girl being dragged safely back to the poolside.

  • Eyes glassy and empty, unable to focus

  • Trying to swim in a particular direction but not making headway 
  • Trying to roll over on the back 
  • Appear to be climbing an invisible ladder
