The perpetrator from Hetian, China, could not have children after suffering several miscarriages, according to local media, and was terrified her husband would divorce her.

The CCTV footage, captured December 26, shows the woman pacing up and down a corridor of a maternity ward before leaving the hospital with an accomplice.

A Hetian district police spokesperson said: “We identified a suspect based on the hospital's CCTV footage. The woman was seen loitering in the corridor of the hospital and repeatedly entering different wards.

“Then, as soon as the mother (patient) was asleep, the suspect took the baby and left the premises.

The pair was seen flagging down and getting on a white saloon car near the hospital.

The authorities found the driver from the licence plate.

”We asked the driver to stop the car immediately and keep the passengers in the vehicle before police officers arrived on scene.
