POLICE yesterday took soil samples from woodland which has been cleared in the search for Claudia Lawrence.
Officers were concentrating on a tennis court-sized area where they appeared to take top soil for testing.
The previous day they had cut down small trees.
Officers have spent 11 days searching fish ponds and woodland at Sand Hutton, six miles from where missing Claudia, 35, lived in York.
They have refused to say what sparked the fresh search.
Even her mum Joan, 78, has not been informed.
Claudia vanished on her way to work at York University in 2009.
No one has been charged with her suspected murder.
