Dad accused of murdering infant son smiles in mugshot

A New Jersey dad smiled for his mugshot — after being arrested for allegedly murdering his 4-month-old son.

William Herring, 42, and the baby’s 22-year-old mother, Brianna Brochhausen, are accused of suffocating their baby while putting him in a “time-out” for crying, then going out for a smoke break, New Jersey State Police said Tuesday.

The Mahwah couple was arrested Monday following a months-long investigation that started when the baby’s limp body was discovered Feb. 14.

The parents were inside a motel in Springfield Township when the crime occurred, police said.

“The baby was positioned on his stomach on the bed, and the comforter was pulled over him, covering his head and entire body,” police said in a press release posted to Facebook.

The couple then took a smoke break — leaving Hunter under the comforter the entire time.

When they returned 10 minutes later, the baby was not breathing, they said.

EMS rushed the unresponsive infant to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where he was taken off life support March 3.

The parents were initially charged with endangering the welfare of a child March 9 and released, cops said.

They were picked up Monday at their Mahwah home on additional charges of murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

“The responsibilities of becoming a new parent can sometimes be overwhelming,” said Burlington County Prosecutor Scott Coffina in a press release. “Those who find themselves at a point of crisis when caring for a newborn child should know that help is available, and they must seek that help rather than taking actions that might harm their child.”
