Death Row inmate who’s had three last meals has final execution date set

A man who has been waiting to die for a crime many believe he didn't commit has been given an execution date of September 22, 7 years after his last execution was botched.

In 2004, Richard Glossip was sentenced to death for hiring a hitman to brutally murder Barry Van Treese in 1997.

Prosecutors say that Glossip hired Justin Sneed to murder Van Treese to death with a baseball bat with Sneed also testifying Glossip paid him to carry out the killing.

In the 18 years that have passed since, Glossip has three times eaten his last meal of fish and chips, a Wendy’s Baconator burger and a strawberry shake – only for his execution to be stalled.

On the last occasion, this was because Oklahoma's prison facilities realised at the last minute they had procured the wrong cocktail of lethal injections for the execution.

However, there are many who believe Glossip is innocent of the crime due to a lack of evidence against him and the suspicion that vital evidence many have been destroyed by police – a claim authorities deny.

In the wake of Glossip's newest death date, there have been calls for his case to be reopened by a federal judge.

Writing this year, they said: "Unlike many cases in which the death penalty has been imposed, the evidence of petitioner’s guilt was not overwhelming."

Meanwhile last year, 20 Oklahoma state lawmakers penned an open letter to Gov. Kevin Stitt asking for the appointment of an independent body to review the case against Glossip.

It read: "Many of those who have signed this letter support the death penalty but, as such, we have a moral obligation to make sure the State of Oklahoma never executes a person for a crime he did not commit.

"Mr. Glossip’s case gives us pause, because it appears the police investigation was not conducted in a manner that gives us confidence that we know the truth.”

Despite the clamour for a reprieve, Glossip's execution date remains set for September 22 and it remains to be seen what he will order for his fourth last meal.
