Democrats have a plan if Trump fires Mueller in ‘Saturday Night Massacre’

House Democrats have a Plan B to make sure Robert Mueller’s findings in the Russia investigation see the light of day if President Trump fires the special counsel, a report said.

Democrats, who regained control of the House in Tuesday’s midterm elections, are preparing for a Saturday Night Massacre situation in which Trump fires top Justice Department officials in an attempt to quash Mueller’s investigation.

In that scenario, Democratic officials told Politico, Mueller would be immediately summoned to Capitol Hill where he would testify about his findings on national television.

Rep. Nancy Pelosi, who’s likely to become the House speaker, has pledged to preserve documentation of the investigation and holds the threat of impeachment hearings up her sleeve if Trump tries to dump Mueller or if the investigation finds evidence of criminal behavior.

“I think you could expect Democrats to take pieces of what they shut down and expose it publicly,” a high-ranking Democratic policy adviser familiar with Pelosi’s planning told Politico. “This is a report paid for with taxpayer dollars. So taxpayers would have a right to know what Mr. Mueller found.”

Trump fired Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Wednesday, a day after Democrats won control of the House in the midterm elections, and named Matthew Whitaker, Sessions chief of staff and a Trump loyalist, as acting attorney general.

He is expected to assume oversight of Mueller from deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

Whitaker in public comments has been critical of the Mueller investigation, arguing that it’s too expansive and a waste of taxpayer money.

He’s also suggested reducing Mueller’s budget so that it “almost grinds to a halt.”

The president has long been upset with Sessions for recusing himself from the Mueller probe because of his contacts with Russian officials when he was with the Trump presidential campaign.

Winning control of the House also allows Democrats to take over the committee chairmanships and gives them subpoena power.

With that, they’re expected to relaunch or re-energize investigations in the House that they claimed Republicans have dragged their feet on.

But Trump in a tweet on Wednesday warned Democrats that if they go after him, he will retaliate in kind.

“If the Democrats think they are going to waste Taxpayer Money investigating us at the House level, then we will likewise be forced to consider investigating them for all of the leaks of Classified Information, and much else, at the Senate level. Two can play that game!,” he wrote.
