The head of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced on Friday that fully vaccinated Americans no longer had to wear a face covering. Dr Walensky said she was “cautiously optimistic” when talking through the decision on US television. The health expert did warn her fellow citizens to remain “humble” as the country takes a large step out of the coronavirus pandemic and towards a return to normalcy.
Dr Walensky told TODAY on NBC: “I am cautiously optimistic that we are seeing this great endpoint in sight.
However, the CDC boss did warn US health authorities needed to make sure not to take “our eye off the ball.”
She said: “But I think we really do have to be humble.
“And say that this virus, the pandemic has given us twists and turns.

“So we can’t get our eye off the ball and we do have to monitor really carefully.”
It comes after Dr Walensky issued the updated advice for Americans who had been administered both doses of a Covid vaccine.
She said: “Anyone who is fully vaccinated can participate in indoor and outdoor activities, large or small, without wearing a mask or physical distancing.
“If you are fully vaccinated, you can start doing the things that you had stopped doing because of the pandemic.”

“We have all longed for this moment when we can get back to some sense of normalcy.”
The announcement was welcomed by US President Joe Biden.
Biden told a press conference on Friday: “Today is a great day for America in our long battle with coronavirus.”
“The CDC is saying, they have concluded, that fully vaccinated people are at a very, very low risk of getting Covid-19. Therefore, if you’ve been fully vaccinated, you no longer need to wear a mask.”
