An Englewood police officer fired at a burglary suspect in a stolen SUV early Thursday morning, and the unharmed suspect was later taken into custody, police said.
The incident unfolded at about 1:45 a.m. in the 2900 block of South Umatilla Street when officers responded to a burglary in progress at a business, police said in a news release.
The suspect, driving a stolen Audi SUV and fleeing the scene, drove through a fence “nearly hitting an officer,” the release said. That’s when another officer fired at the vehicle. The SUV, with front-end damage, drove off.
At about 10 a.m. Thursday the suspect was taken into custody without incident, police said.
“The suspect was not injured in this morning’s incident and the vehicle was recovered,” according to the release. The 18th Judicial District’s Critical Incident Response team is investigating the police shooting. On Thursday morning, police did not release the name of the suspect.
