Evil thug who beat wife to death in row over her mashed potato dies in UK prison

A man who battered his wife to death after an argument about the quality of her mashed potato died in prison, it has emerged.

Colin Adlard, 72, used a hammer to bludgeon his wife of 30 years, 59-year-old Wendy, as she slept the morning after the row.

He pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to life in prison in September 2011.

The court had heard how he launched the brutal attack on his wife because she was always “shouting at him and nagging him”.

The pair had been directors of Born Free Equine Health, a tack shop in Old Stratford, Northamptonshire.

Now, it has emerged the murderer died in prison just weeks after signing a 'Do Not Resuscitate' (DNR) order.

The cause of death was heart failure, one of several health conditions he was suffering according to an independent investigation into his death.

Adlard had been ordered to serve a minimum 16 years of his life sentence, hence would have been eligible for parole in 2027.

He was suffering from heart failure, heart disease, kidney disease and anaemia.

The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman report stated Adlard was in "poor health" when he was moved to Gartree Prison in Leicestershire March 2012.

Staff provided him with a wheelchair in February 2019 when his mobility worsened.

Last April he was taken to hospital for tests after being treated by a prison nurse, complaining of shortness of breath.

He signed the DNR in May last year, just one month before he died.

Adlard brutally killed his wife at about 5.30am on January 7, 2011, following the mash row.

He smashed her with a lump hammer up to five times causing fatal head and brain injuries, the court heard

Following the attack, Adlard rang 999 and said: “I think I've just killed my wife. I hit her over the head with a hammer while she was in bed."

She was pronounced dead upon arrival at hospital.
