Give hard-working Britons a Bank Holiday between now and Christmas

Give hard-working Britons ANOTHER Bank Holiday between now and Christmas, union bosses urge the Government

  • TUC urged UK government to bolster worker holidays up to EU average of 12
  • UK gets just eight bank holidays and the next one isn’t until Christmas Day
  • They said work is ‘more intense’ and we’re doing millions of overtime hours
  • Business department said there were no plans to change or add any holidays

A Trade Union organisation has urged the Government to slot in an extra public holiday before Christmas to help workers cope with an increasingly pressured work environment.

Workers will have to wait until 25 December for the next bank holiday after today, a four-month gap which the Trade Unions Congress (TUC) said should be filled with a new statutory day off.

‘As new technology changes our economy, the benefits should be shared by working people. That means less time at work, more time with family and friends, and decent pay for everyone,’ said TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady.

Work is ‘becoming more intense’ and employees are putting in ‘millions of hours overtime,’ she added.

‘The Government should create a new public holiday between now and Christmas.’

After today, the next UK bank holiday is Christmas day and the union organisation have called for the government to slot in another day off before then

TUC General Secretary, Frances O’Grady (pictured), said the government needs to boost up the UK’s eight bank holidays to meet the EU average of 12

The TUC said that the UK needs more holidays to boost it up to the EU average of 12.

While UK workers are entitled to eight days off per year, lucky workers in Slovakia, Slovenia, Finland and Cyprus get as many as 15.

A Business Department spokesman told AP that they consider requests for additional public holidays to remember cultural and historical event which they do consider.

He added that there were no plans to make any changes but that ‘next year’s early May bank holiday will be on May 8 to ensure as many people as possible can mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day.’
