Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Thursday got personal in attacking President Trump — going so far as to draw his sister into the fray — before daring the president to bet with him over whether he can make a competitive run at New York on Election Day.
The Democrat raged in a press call the morning after Trump signed a memo that seeks to pull funds from New York City and other cities that allow “lawlessness.”
He dared Trump to bet money on whether he will carry New York state in November, noting Trump’s remarks to The Post last month that he was putting the state “in play” against Democratic nominee Joe Biden.
“Whatever he would like to wager on his winning New York, I would take him up on it,” Cuomo said.
“So if he is serious, the old expression ‘Put your money where your mouth is.’ How much do you want to wager you’re going to win New York? You’re going to lose New York. Why? Because those who know the president the best like him the least.”
He also cited alleged criticism of Trump by his sister, retired federal Judge Maryanne Trump Barry, as reported in a recent book by the president’s estranged niece, Mary Trump.
“Either the sister is mentally not competent, or she’s accurate. I don’t hear anyone trying to overturn her decisions based on a lack of mental competence,” Cuomo said.
Trump Barry, 83, was secretly recorded by her niece saying, among other things, that “Donald’s out for Donald.”
The governor lashed out at Trump in an escalating fight between the leaders. On Wednesday night, Cuomo all but threatened Trump’s safety in response to the memo on defunding cities, which was first reported by The Post.
“He better have an army if he thinks he’s gonna walk down the street in New York,” Cuomo said late Wednesday. “He can’t have enough bodyguards to walk through New York City.”
Trump returned fire Thursday morning with a pair of tweets slamming Cuomo for mismanaging the coronavirus pandemic by forcing nursing homes to accept COVID-19-positive patients. Cuomo wrote a book on his management of the crisis and recently gave a self-congratulatory speech at the Democratic National Convention.
“Governors Andrew Cuomo of New York has the worst record on death and China Virus. 11,000 people alone died in Nursing Homes because of his incompetence!” Trump wrote.
On the press call Thursday, Cuomo mocked “Commander Trump” for referring to the pandemic as a war.
“The president, as a commander-in-chief, has been an abysmal failure in the war,” Cuomo said. “If this was an actual war, he could be court-martialed for dereliction of duty.”
The governor argued that Trump’s early March Europe travel ban didn’t come early enough. He said Trump, not he, was “negligent.”
