A crazed man with a hammer beat a 66-year-old professor to death in the basement of his Flatbush, Brooklyn home Monday night, police said.
The home invader bludgeoned Jeremy D. Safran — a professor of psychology at the New School — in the head and torso at about 6 p.m. at 155 Stratford Road, cops said.
The 28-year-old suspect is believed to have followed Safran’s daughter to the location, where he briefly spoke to her in an apparent effort to case the home, sources said.
He then broke in a short time later.
Someone spotted the break in and called the daughter — who at the same time heard the sounds of violence coming from downstairs. Someone then called 911, sources said.
Cops found Safran unresponsive on the floor of the basement and the attacker hiding in a closet.
The man, whose name was not released, was taken into custody without incident. He was being held a the 70th Precinct. The woman was unharmed.
