Holy statue is completely unscathed in house fire that destroyed everything else

The property in a neighbourhood called Jose Simeon Canas, in the municipality of Zacatecoluca, south-central El Salvador, was ravaged by a fire caused by candles.

The family who lived there reportedly left the candles unattended after going out for the day.

But when firefighters entered the scorched remains of the home, they were shocked to find one item in particular that had survived the flames.

According to photos shared on social media by those who attended the blaze, a figurine of Maximon, known as San Simon, resting on a small alter was completely unscathed.

San Simon is a Mayan deity and folk saint worshipped in Latin America.

Although San Simon is said to represent both light and dark and was considered a trickster and cunning womaniser, he is also said to be a protector of couples.

The most famous temple dedicated to him is in the municipality of San Andres Itzapa, where shamans are said to burn food and flowers as an offering to the saint.

But this isn't the first time holy statues have been behind strange occurrences.

Earlier this year, locals in a village in Acapulco, Mexico, claimed a statue of Jesus spontaneously started crying tears of blood for the fourth time.

They said it was a message from God about the region's rising crime rates.

Video footage taken of the strange-looking Christ shows the green-eyed doll with streams of red liquid running down its cheeks.
