Inside Scottish male jail where trans rapist Isla Bryson is being held

Inside notorious Scottish prison where trans double rapist is being held after move from women’s jail: Isla Bryson will share wing with gangland killer, murderers and two male sex attackers who both want to change their gender

  • Rapist Bryson, 31, was moved from Cornton Vale to HMP Edinburgh yesterday
  • Sex offender has woken up in male jail housing killers, gangsters and rapists

Trans sex offender Isla Bryson has been slung into Scotland’s most notorious men’s prison housing killers, gangsters and two other male rapists who also want to become women, MailOnline can reveal today.

Bryson, 31, was swept out of Cornton Vale in Stirling yesterday and taken 40 miles to HMP Edinburgh after an extraordinary U-turn by Nicola Sturgeon.

The First Minister was forced into a climbdown after she admitted Bryson should not be incarcerated in Scotland’s only all-female jail – just a day after her justice secretary backed the decision.

The now-notorious sex offender Bryson, who still has a penis, had raped two women while living as a man, Adam Graham, and only began transitioning after being charged with using his ‘muscular’ frame to abuse the two women.

The former DJ’s estranged wife Shonna Graham even dismissed her husband’s transition as a ‘sham’ and told MailOnline Bryson was ‘bullsh***ing the authorities’ to avoid a men’s prison. But today the defendant is waking up in a male jail housing many of Scotland’s most violent prisoners including murderers and sex offenders.

HMP Edinburgh, also known as Saughton Prison, was for many years the home of serial killer and paedophile Peter Tobin, who once boasted that he’d killed 48 women. He died in October.

Assassin James McDonald, is serving 35 years – the longest jail term in Scottish history – and was sent there for shooting members of the rival Lyons crime clan in a drive-by.

In 2017 at HMP Edinburgh he left fellow murderer Raymond Cartwright with stab wounds to his face and stomach, hit another man with ‘a blunt instrument’ and head-butted a prison guard in the five man brawl.

Limbs in the Loch killer William Beggs is serving a life sentence in Saughton Prison, Edinburgh, for raping, murdering and dismembering Barry Wallace, 18, in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, in 1999.

The teenager’s limbs and torso were found in Loch Lomond and his head was dumped in the sea off the Ayrshire coast.

Bryson is also in the same jail as two other sex offenders who say they want to be women.  Rapist Albert Caballero, 50, is now wishing to be known as Claire and asked guards for lipstick and eye make-up to make him look more feminine.

Serial rapist Jonathon Mallon, 40, has declared that he now wants to be called Charlene and told inmates that he hopes to me moved into a Scottish women’s jail by Easter. The predator was caged for life in 2014 after a 14-year reign of attacks on a string of vulnerable women.

HMP Edinburgh also has a separate wing for women – but Bryson was not allowed in there despite initially being placed in a women’s jail by the Scottish Prison Service.

The killer was moved to the women’s wing at HMP Edinburgh after being thrown out of Cornton Vale, where Bryson was held, after reports about having sex with female prisoners in the cells.

Rachel Trelfa is also caged there.

She and her then civil partner Nyomi Fee chained two-year old Liam Fee to a cage in a room filled with snakes and rats before murdering him in 2014. Liam – Trelfa’s son – was beaten so severely that medics likened his injuries to those usually sustained by car crash victims.

As Bryson was moved yesterday it emerged the sex offender had enrolled in a beauty course while awaiting trial.

The convicted rapist began taking the beauty course at Ayrshire College’s Kilwinning Campus, which reportedly involved both classroom work and practical applications, after having been charged for sex attacks.

Bryson, 31, was convicted this week of raping two women in 2016 and 2019 following a trial at the High Court in Glasgow. Bryson will return to court for sentencing next month.

Bryson was enrolled at the college for a three-month period in 2021 and is no longer enrolled, Ayrshire College spokesperson told MailOnline.

The spokesperson added: ‘Ayrshire College had no prior knowledge of this individual being charged with any offences.

‘We will not be making any further comment on this matter.’

Bryson’s course was almost exclusively comprised of female students, most of whom were ‘much younger’ than the convicted rapist, reports indicate.

Susan Smith, of the campaign group For Women Scotland, suspects the rapist’s classmates did not know about the charges because they were filed under Bryson’s ‘original name.’

‘Presumably they knew him by his new name, so they probably wouldn’t have been able to find out anything about this person,’ Ms Smith told STV News today, adding that it is ‘absolutely terrifying that people can hide their identities and gain access to young women in this way.’

News of Bryson’s enrolment at Ayrshire College comes just hours after the rapist was moved out of Scotland’s only all-women’s prison to a male jail within hours of a humiliating U-turn by Nicola Sturgeon.

Ms Sturgeon told First Minister’s Questions: ‘I don’t think it’s possible to have a rapist within a women’s prison’.

A vehicle believed to be transporting Bryson was pictured leaving Cornton Vale jail in Stirling at around 2.30pm and it arrived at a replacement facility at 5.20pm.

The SNP leader revealed the U-turn just 24 hours after her own justice secretary Keith Brown backed the Scottish Prison Service’s decision to put the transgender double rapist with female inmates in Cornton Vale.

The move comes after campaigners, politicians and a United Nations human rights expert all raised concerns over Bryson being housed in a women’s prison.

MPs and MSPs warned that female inmates could be at risk and the move sent a signal that male sex offenders could ‘game the system’.

Scottish Tory leader Douglas Ross said : ‘It should not have taken public disgust and a slew of negative headlines about a double rapist being sent to a women’s prison for Nicola Sturgeon to realise this was completely unacceptable and wrong.’

Bryson had only started to transition after appearing in court on the rape charges.

The rapist’s estranged wife Shonna Graham, 31, previously told MailOnline her former partner’s transition was a ‘sham for attention’ and he was ‘bull******** the authorities’ to avoid a male prison.

Bryson’s case comes weeks after the Scottish parliament passed a bill to make it easier for people to change their legal gender, drawing criticism from some women’s rights campaigners who argue that predatory men could use it to access single-sex spaces such as bathrooms.

The controversial bill, passed in December, made Scotland the first nation of the UK to back a self-identification process for changing gender, including removing the need for a medical diagnosis of gender dysphoria and lowering the minimum age to 16 from 18.

The bill has deepened a rift with the government of British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in London, with the two already at loggerheads over whether Scotland can hold another independence referendum.

Scotland’s devolved parliament can make its own laws, but the UK can veto legislation if it deems it to interfere with matters within the national jurisdiction. Britain’s move to block the gender bill is the first time it has invoked that power.

Ms Sturgeon has called the UK’s blocking of the bill a ‘full-frontal attack’ on the Scottish Parliament.
