Is there a post office strike and will my post be affected?

HUNDREDS of Post Office branches will close today because of a row over workers' pay rise.

Over 2,000 Post Office staff are set to take part in strike action over what the union has called an "insulting" rise.

Is there a Post Office strike?

There is a Post Office strike today May 3, 2022.

During the strike, there will be no cash deliveries or collections from the 11,500 sub-post offices.

The Post Office said that the vast majority of branches would remain open, unaffected by the action.

The strikes are concentrated mainly on locations directly managed by the Post Office.

Why is there a Post Office strike and how long will it last for?

The Communication Worker Union (CWU) is protesting the pay rise offered to workers as it is not in line with the rise in living costs.

This is a 24-hour strike so the branches affected should return to normal operating capacity tomorrow (May 4, 2022).

After a pay freeze in 2021/2022, the Post Office offered a 2% rise plus a one-off £250 payment, which would be pro-rata for part-time employees.

CWU claim that the increase is not enough to keep up with the rising cost of living, which is rising at 7% per year.

Union assistant secretary Andy Furey told the BBC: "We know Post Office has turned over huge profits in these past few years – management can afford to provide our members with a reasonable pay increase if they wanted.

"This is not an issue of affordability. This is about power play from a management that is needlessly antagonising its key worker employees."

The union also said there was a mandate for more strike action in the coming weeks.

Which areas will Post Office strikes affect?

There are 114 Post Offices that this strike will impact, plus limiting the capabilities of the thousands of sub-post offices.

The Post Office released a statement which said: "There are 114 branches – typically in city centres – across the UK that are directly managed by Post Office.

"Posters are displayed which show where the nearest alternative branches are located. Customers can also find more information at postoffice.co.uk/branch-finder."
