Police in Germany said a series of crashes in the capital Berlin are being investigated as a possible Islamist terror attack.

A number of people were injured when a black Opel Astra collided with vehicles on a motorway on Tuesday night.

Six people were injured, with three being severely, when the 30-year-old motorist drove into the vehicles.

The crashes led to the closing of one of the main roads in Berlin, which continued into today.

Investigators told Germany’s Bild newspaper they believed “religious” motivations were behind the attack.

One local prosecution official told AFP that “Islamism” was the motive.
