Once she responded to one junk-mail offer they marked her down as “vulnerable”.
She was then bombarded with more and more mail in a process officials condemned as “grooming”.
Desperate for human contact like Eleanor Rigby in the classic Beatles song, she kept ordering just to enjoy chats with postal staff and couriers.
The OAP sent off for plates, clothes she did not need and had a room full of unopened parcels.
Now she has too little cash to pay towards her care.
Caroline North of trading standards in Leicestershire said: “It’s heartbreaking.
“We’re often left feeling angry that there are people out there targeting the vulnerable.”
She believes local victims have lost £500,000 and urges friends and family to look out for signs old folk have been targeted.
